To close windows fast, just click on the left side of the window's menu and select "Close" from the popup menu. Or, just double-click the window's icon for a faster close.
Remove Outlook Express Splash Screen
To remove the 'splash' screen that appears when opening Outlook Express, you will need to modify the registry. If you are comfortable doing so, run "regedit.exe" Navigate down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, then click on "Outlook Express." On the right pane, right-click on a blank area, choosing "New" then "DWORD Value." Name this value "NoSplash." Right-click on the new DWORD Value you made and choose "Modify." On the dialog box that appears, enter "1" as the value data and press OK to close the dialog box. Now, close Registry Editor.
Remove Dial-Up Connection Delay
Do you use DUN (Dial-Up Networking)? Do you notice a delay from when you (or your login script) finishes logging onto your ISP to when Win95 displays the "Connected.." box? If so, you may have a checkbox set that you do not need, causing the delay.
To try this possible fix, access the Dial-Up Networking properties for your Internet connection. Click on the "Start" button, choosing "Programs," "Accessories," "Communications," and then "Dial-Up Networking." Right-click on your Internet connection method (ISP) and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu that follows. When you see the resulting dialog box, click the "Server Types" tab. Uncheck "Log on to network" under "Advanced options." Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
This may or may not work for you, but we tested this tip on one machine, eliminating a 10 second delay. Worked wonders for me.
Another Way to Minimize Apps
To minimize the currently running and visible application, just click on the application's representation on the taskbar. This does not work with Win95.
View Your Dynamic IP Address
When using Dial-Up Networking, depending on your ISP, you probably are given a dynamic IP address instead of a static one. If so, then there may be times when you need to find your exact address for multi-player chat or gaming. Just click on the "Start" button, select "Run," and execute "WINIPCFG". A window will appear showing your connection information, including your IP address.
Taskbar Toolbar Icons Change Unexpectedly
